FAQs

WHAT IS DIGITAL MUSIC EUROPE?

Digital Music Europe is an alliance of European companies that have revolutionised the music industry with technology. DME’s members are engaged in the online distribution of music to consumers or provide services related to online distribution of music. They have transformed music consumption and are driving the recovery of  the music industry to positive economic growth in Europe and the rest of the world.

Representing Europe’s leading digital music innovators, the coalition will work with policy-makers and stakeholders to ensure that the sector’s growth and European leadership continue, and that the most important stakeholders – creators and consumers – continue to reap the benefits.

WHO ARE DME MEMBERS?

Digital Music Europe’s founding members include 7digital, Deezer, Qobuz, SoundCloud, Soundcharts and Spotify. Membership is open to European companies that share the alliance’s core principles and are engaged in the online distribution of music to consumers or provide services related to online distribution of music.

WHY HAS DME BEEN CREATED?

There is currently no other organisation effectively representing the interests of Europe’s music digital companies. The alliance will provide its members with the opportunity to engage with European policy-makers, as the EU is developing a range of policies that will impact the European digital music industry. DME will promote the global leadership and growth of the sector while giving a voice to smaller companies and start-ups that often lack the resources to monitor EU policy developments affecting their businesses and to engage with decision-makers.

WHAT ARE THE ALLIANCE’S OBJECTIVES?

First of all DME’s goals is to promote the global leadership of Europe in digital music and its members are eager to serve as an example for European entrepreneurs and policy-makers.

DME aims to support policies that promote fair competition and innovation for the digital music services and to advocate for policy and regulatory solutions that both enhance the consumer music experience and support investment and growth, across Europe and globally, of the digital music sector.

WHAT ARE THE ALLIANCE’S POLICY PRIORITIES?

The most important initiatives and legislative proposals on the EU agenda which will shape the European digital music industry include copyright, geo-blocking, online platforms, data and e-privacy. It is critical these policy decisions take into consideration the complexity of the digital music industry and the challenges faced by innovators, benefiting, in turn, consumers, and creators.
